PERFORMANCE-THEATRE

* CANTABILE 2 PROVE THEIR VIBRANT GIFTS, FANTASIZING FIGURES AND IMAGES. There is not much sidewalk realism about this production, a no-excuses showplace where highly theatrical figures bolt and strut, flutter and crawl across B.v.H.H.S.’s ascetic, white-gray plaza with its flat staircase and backdrop lit up in blue or red, as though the wizard Robert Wilson was responsible for these visions. A wordless arena, it never for a second lets you forget that theater is about making images – see the root of Greek theatron, ‘to see’.

* Movement, image and sound are Cantabile 2’s brand of theater. Here, the elements merge in a powerful, attractive, very funny dance performance about life unfolding in a city square. It is not a place that invites lingering. There are no benches, no tubs of flowers here, just a flat staircase sprawled at an angle across the stage – and making us wish that our urban spaces had such visual, architectural qualities. Attractive, bright rainbow hues suffusing the space make the stage resemble an art installation with live figures in sophisticated costumes.

* THE RUTHLESS, INTOXICATING BEAUTY OF EVERYDAY LIFE – In a beautiful, simple scenography by B.v.H.H.S., Cantabile 2’s movement artists act out intoxicating life patterns in the public chaos of a Venetian plaza that could be anywhere.

- Information / Newspaper / Christian Lund -

* The enormous visual wealth is amplified by Facchini’s tight direction and B.v.H.H.S’s simple scenography.
